Mobility makes pedestrian the crossing between Villajoyosa and Murtal avenues to generate a safer itinerary for pedestrians
The Department of Mobility has pedestrianized the crossing between Villajoyosa and Murtal avenues to generate a safer itinerary for pedestrians in an area that is experiencing a significant population increase. The mayor of the area, José Ramón González de Zárate, recalled that “in addition to the pedestrians, this crossing was used by drivers who circulated on Villajoyosa Avenue or who descended through Bolivia to join Murtal Avenue. However, having a very narrow sidewalk, at some times pedestrians were forced to walk along the road, with the corresponding risk to their safety. ”
From there, he added, that “we have chosen to make pedestrian this section of just under 100 meters –very used to reach the beach-, thus generating a safer itinerary for pedestrians and also for vehicles, since by closing this section to the traffic it is avoided that the vehicles that ascend by the Murtal street bump into those that previously were incorporated from the crossing ”.
After the closure of this crossing to the vehicles, the Department of Mobility has proceeded to reorder the traffic, so that drivers who drive along Villajoyosa Avenue and want to exit to Via Park must travel about 140 meters until they reach the intersection with Murtal Avenue.
De Zárate has stressed that it is a “provisional measure” since “in the future” two works will be carried out that will generate new pedestrian spaces. One of these actions is the development of a private tertiary zone that includes “the obligation” to create “a sidewalk”; while the other is of a municipal nature: the remodeling of Murtal Avenue, for which “there is already a project” and which will be “one of the most important works of this legislature”.
