'Mírame! Ahora me ves' vindicates the contribution of gypsy culture to modern society

‘José Llorca Linares’ Social Center under the Department of Social Welfare opens its doors to host the gypsy culture exhibition ‘Mírame! Ahora me ves ', which aims to make the Romany culture visible and break the stereotypes that degrade gypsies.
The show is the result of the collaboration of the University of Alicante (UA), the Federation of Gypsy Associations of the Valencian Community (FAGA), the Arakerando Gypsy Women's Association and La Fragua Youth Association and now Benidorm City Council as well.
The acting mayor, Ana Pellicer, has toured together with the councilor for Social Welfare, Ángela Llorca, other members of the municipal corporation and the president of FAGA, Ramón Fernández, the exhibition that exhibits a collection of panels with which the viewer interacts with the aim of making known many of the peculiarities of the gypsy people that, despite their proximity, are unknown.
Ángela Llorca has vindicated the program 'Equality and social inclusion of the gypsy people' managed by the Social Welfare department in order to "seek effective community inclusion in equal treatment and non-discrimination of this group" which places special emphasis on eradication of school absenteeism because "it diminishes - he insisted - the options of progress of the gypsy population".
With 'Mírame! Ahora me ves ', Benidorm City Council "highlights the gypsy culture," says Llorca, and advocates "to break with the stereotypes" that negatively affect these people whose culture remains "unknown to a large part of society." The person in charge of the Social Welfare department has encouraged all of Benidorm to “discover” the gypsy people from the perspective of “respect” towards their community and “admiration for their culture”.
On his part, Ramón Fernández has highlighted how much "the gypsy people contribute to Spanish culture" and has advocated for "going hand in hand" with non-gypsies and gypsies. Regarding the specific case of Benidorm, the president of FAGA maintains the need for the local community to have "a normalized quality of life" which is what the exhibition seeks, that people who visit the city "do not see gypsies in Benidorm, see people , has clarified.
The exhibition 'Mírame! Ahora me ves’ can be visited at‘ José Llorca Linares ’until November 18.
