Benidorm City Council has kept a minute of silence this afternoon in memory of the latest victim of gender violence, a woman murdered in the town of Agüimes, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The acting mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, has led the rally, in which representatives of the different political groups and municipal workers have participated to show their rejection of sexist violence.
On this occasion the victim was a 39-year-old woman of Colombian origin, found dead by her minor daughter who came home after spending days without knowing anything about her mother. The woman was found in the house with a shot in the head next to her husband, presumed author of the facts, who committed suicide after assassinating her. The 47-year-old man, a native of the Canary Islands, had a gun license, although he had no police record or previous allegations of gender violence.
The Department of Equality reminds women who may be facing a case of abuse, who can go to the municipal services or use the toll-free number 016 against gender violence. The call is not reflected in the telephone bill, but it is advisable to delete it from the list of calls from mobile phones.
