The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, and the Councilor for Sports, Mariló Cebreros, together with a representative of the Municipal Corporation, attended Palau d'Esports l'Illa in Benidorm this morning for the first training session of the Asobal League team with which the club chaired by Javier Abínzano has started the 2022-2023 season.
In this ninth season in the highest category of Spanish handball, Fernando Latorre continues to lead the coaching staff that adds six signings to the squad with international experience to face with level and professionalism in a season that will add to the Asobal League, the competition of Copa del Rey and the EHF European League and that as the main novelty has the incorporation of the sponsors of TM Group and the name of the first team as TM Benidorm.
After the words of President Abínzano showing his full confidence in the squad, the goal of repeating the successes of last season and playing for a long time in the European League, Mayor Toni Pérez, after welcoming the new additions to the city and the staff in general, highlighted that the Benidorm Handball Club "is the emblem of the city, for Spain and Europe, in the highest category of professional handball", pointing out to everyone "the opportunity" that is presented this season, thanks to the achievements achieved last season, such as “showcase and opportunity for success”.
For this, Pérez pointed out, it is time to "work and prepare", under the club's postulates: "effort, humility, work and union" in the confidence that "the success of Handball Benidorm is that of the city". Finally, the mayor thanked the moments of happiness that the club provides to the fans, the sports bases and the city.
The club has been reinforced with the goalkeeper Samuel Ibáñez, the Argentinian Ramiro Martínez, the Serbian Mladen Sotic, the Bosnian-Croat pivot Dragan Soljic, the Lithuanian Rolandas Bernatonis and the Portuguese Rubén Santos. The goalkeeper Roberto Rodríguez, the wingers Ivan Nikcevic, Iván Rodríguez, the pivots Iker Serrano and Pepe Oliver, and the front lines Colo Vainstein, Jules Lignieres, James Parker, Carlos Grau and Eduardo Calle remain in the team. From the team in 1st National they will be joined during the preseason by the young promises Santi Barceló, Juancar Sempere, Dani Lara.
The Draw for the 33rd Asobal League will be held on August 9 and the regular competition will begin on September 3, lasting until June 4, 2023. There will be an interruption, during January, to play the World Championship of selections.
The EHF European League competition has set its first round to be played on September 26 and October 4.
