A lively Burial of the Sardine brings the Carnival festivities in Benidorm to a close

A lively Burial of the Sardine brought the Carnival celebrations in Benidorm to a close last night. Organised by the Associació de Penyes ‘Verge del Sofratge’, with the collaboration of the Department of Fiestas, this satirical parade set off at 9:30 p.m. from the Casa del Fester and wound its way through various streets in the city centre, ending at the Paseo de Colón, where a spectacular fireworks display was launched before the flames consumed ‘Doña Sardina’.

The Councillor for Fiestas, Mariló Cebreros, along with several members of the local government, including regional deputy José Ramón González de Zárate, accompanied the Associació de Penyes in mourning attire for this lively procession. Dressed in themed clothing for the occasion, the president of the peñas, Diego Carrasco, and his board of directors carried the sardine on their shoulders throughout the route, a task they also shared in some stages with mayorals of the Comissió de Festes Majors Patronals, headed by its president Ramón Cano; and with the queens of the Local Fiestas, Laura Ivars Marín and Carmen Guillem Campos, and their courts of honour.
