Environment and Mundomar Foundation organize a seabed cleaning in Rincon de Loix
The Department of Environment collaborates with the seabed cleaning day organized by Mundomar Foundation that will take place next Saturday, October 19, in Rincon de Loix area and also has the support of the Diving Center Nisos Diving The mayor of the area, Mónica Gómez; Mundomar Communications Manager, Mª José Marcos; and Estefanía Calatayud, representative of the Foundation, have reported all the details of this “first seabed cleaning”, which will be complemented with “recreational activities and awareness workshops” aimed at children.
The councillor explained that the ‘Pelícano’ boat of the Beaches service allows daily to locate and remove possible residues that are on the surface of the sea, “but not the detection of those that can be found at the bottom”. Hence, "cleaning actions such as that proposed now are of vital importance to maintain our bay and, therefore, the maritime zone of the Natural Park of Serra Gelada, free of waste."
Gómez has pointed out that “the fact that this cleaning day is carried out in the marine environment makes it essential for experienced and qualified divers to carry it out,” although “all those who love snorkeling can also collaborate, to lend their it helps in shallow depth ”, acting in the rock areas.
For his part, Marcos has pointed out that this cleaning is part of the actions carried out by Mundomar Foundation to "educate and raise awareness about the preservation of the natural environment, and especially marine biology." On this occasion, in this awareness work, the workshops that will be held in tents located on the sand of Rincon de Loix will play an important role; the same tents in which all the waste removed will be exhibited later, informing of its type and total tonnage.
"We want residents and tourists to see the beautiful part of the beaches, but also to be aware of the devastation they may suffer from human neglect," he added; while Calatayud has pointed out that the Foundation wants to “contribute a small grain of sand” to combat “the crisis of contamination by plastics”.
The Councilor for the Environment has applauded this initiative that also has a didactic part focused on the little ones "know from an early age the importance of keeping the environment clean."
