The motion that the mayor will take to the next plenary session includes asking for the licence of the building and the pier

Benidorm will send to Costas the project to convert the current constructions of the island into an Interpretation Center

18 February 2020
Benidorm remitirá a Costas el proyecto para reconvertir en Centro de Interpretación las actuales construcciones de la isla

Benidorm City Council will send to the General Directorate of Coasts the basic project of comprehensive rehabilitation of existing buildings on the island to convert them into an Interpretation Center in which “publicize their environment, natural, environmental, historical and historical characteristics. cultural ”. This is reflected in the motion that the mayor, Toni Pérez, will raise to the next ordinary plenary session and that has been addressed today in a Board of Spokespersons. This motion includes “agreeing to request to the General Directorate of Coasts the concession on the pier and the existing constructions on the island” based on such project and for “the maximum possible term” in accordance with the Law of 1988.

As indicated in the motion, last October "in order to process the administrative concession" requested by the City Council, the Coastal Provincial Service required "full agreement of the Corporation" in this regard, the "basic project" of the Center of Interpretation, and "a series of necessary technical studies", which have been prepared by municipal technicians and by the Institut d'Ecologia Litoral.

Hence, once the required documentation and the basic project of the Interpretation Center are available, the mayor proposes a plenary agreement to request that administrative concession.

The interest of the City Council to obtain the concession on the jetty and the rest of the construction of the island is motivated by the environmental and tourist relevance of the islet, “icon par excellence of the city”. As stated in the motion, the island "has been linked since time immemorial" to Benidorm and "has always captivated locals and visitors thanks to its physiognomy and particularities."

Thus, since 1966 the island is a municipal protected area and since 1990 it has a Special Protection Plan. It is also included in the Natura 2000 Network of Protected Areas of the Valencian Community and in the demarcation of the Serra Gelada Natural Park, established in 2005 and which is first maritime-terrestrial of the Community. These characteristics make the island "a bulwark of the tourist attraction of the city" that arouses "maximum interest" so that thousands of people annually visit it.
