The action involves an investment of 418,724 euros that will be financed by EPSAR and will be completed in March or April

Benidorm will renew the entire wastewater pumping system in Poniente

02 November 2023
Benidorm renovará todo el sistema de bombeo de aguas residuales en Poniente

With the new pumps, the problems of bad odors and runoff in episodes of heavy rain will be eliminated

Benidorm City Council will replace the entire Poniente wastewater pumping system, whose station is located near Elche Park, to definitively put an end to the problems of bad odors in the area and water saturation when they occur. episodes of heavy rain in the city.

The action has a cost of 418,724.34 euros and will be completed "by March or April" according to the Councilor for the Water Cycle, José Ramón González de Zárate, who visited the pumping station today. accompanied by technicians from the Hidraqua dealership.

This action was part of the investments planned by the Public Entity for Wastewater Sanitation (EPSAR). However, the fact that EPSAR itself had barely undertaken any of the planned actions meant that the City Council had to carry out some on its own due to their urgency.

“Thanks to the good harmony that we now have with the EPSAR managers, we have achieved a very positive performance for the city and it has been possible to modify its budget on account of the actions that the City Council has already carried out and that it should have undertaken by the EPSAR” explained the councilor.

In this sense, González de Zárate recalled that “with the Botànic government we were told that the investments were going to be made, but the truth is that barely 1% of a global investment of 3,261,000 euros for drives and stations was made. of pumping in Benidorm and Alfaz del Pi”.

Now what has been achieved is to modify the technical project so that the renovation and replacement project for the Poniente pumping system increases its resources and allows for the execution of “a much more complex work appropriate to the needs of the city, which goes beyond the “Initial 65,383.21 euros to 418,724.34,” said the councilor.

“The current harmony with the EPSAR has meant that they have already confirmed to us that they are going to do it. That is to say, instead of taking the money that we Benidorm residents pay through the sanitation fee, what they do is execute the investments,” he added.

This pumping station collects the wastewater that comes from La Cala, Foietes Colonia Madrid, and the Central area, which due to the obsolescence of the infrastructure had a problem of bad odors and the arrival of wastewater that reached Elche Park and Poniente Beach.

In addition, at the station, there is also a problem with the deterioration of the ceiling slab “which can come off.”

Once the action is completed, the problem of rainwater flooding will also end since the pumps will not be below grade as of now, but above. “This will allow us to not have to close the Elche Park or the beach because the waters rise from the station,” the councillor concluded.
