The City Hall’s Espai d’Art is hosting ‘Mar’, an exhibition by painter Vicenta Meneses Escudero, from today until September 25. The exhibition features a selection of works focused on the sea, in which the artist explores the shapes, colours, reflections and textures of water from a perspective that lies between the figurative and the abstract. Meneses moves away from traditional landscape representation to portray a sea without shores, horizons or boundaries, focusing instead on its shapes, colours, reflections and textures.

A Fine Arts graduate from Miguel Hernández University and trained at its Altea campus, Meneses has spent approximately the past two years focusing her work on the marine world. Her paintings, which lie between the figurative and the abstract, combine acrylics and mixed media to capture the different nuances of water and the changes it undergoes in the light.

For the artist, the sea represents much more than an element of the landscape. Its constant movement also becomes a way of reflecting on life and the passage of time. She explains: “We see the water receding in a wave, but we don’t know where it goes or where it comes back from,” a reflection that sums up the importance of movement and transformation in her work. Her personal connection with her paintings is also evident when it comes to choosing a favourite. “I couldn’t choose one particular painting because there is something special about all of them; they’re like my children,” says Meneses.

‘Mar’ marks another exploration of the Mediterranean by the artist, following exhibitions such as ‘Ecos del Mar’, held at the Hotel Montíboli Cultural Centre in Villajoyosa in 2025, and ‘Aqua’, at the Casino Mediterráneo in Benidorm in 2024. Her previous work also includes ‘Pasión por el colour’ and ‘La emoción del color’. She is also a co-founder of the independent group Pintoras de Benidorm, established in 1995.

With this new exhibition, the artist invites residents and visitors to discover a different vision of the sea, one based on the colour, texture and movement of water.
