Benidorm turns towards the festivity of Virgen del Carmen

15 July 2018
Benidorm se ha volcado con la festividad de la Virgen del Carmen

Benidorm has lived a popular weekend in honor of the patroness saint of the sea, the Virgin of Carmen. Yesterday, Saturday, the traditional offering in memory of the fallen in the sea took place. The image, carried by women, departed at 8:00 pm from Paseo de Colón until reaching Plaza de la Señoría where laurel wreaths were placed.

The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, and the councilman of Fiestas, Jesús Carrobles, deposited an offering on behalf of the municipal corporation. The president of the Comissió de Festes Majors Patronals, Paco Marín, also did the same, with the queens, Fátima Carrobles and Anna Calbo; and the president of Carmen Festival Committee, Ginés Alvarado and the Seawoman of Honor, Cristina Pérez. After the act of homage to the fallen in the sea, which was attended by members of the different municipal groups, there was a festival on Paseo de Colón.

Today Sunday, the events have continued with the sea procession. At 7:00 pm, the members of the Fiestas Commision and authorities gathered on Paseo de Colón to go towards the Church of Sant Jaume and Santa Anna. At the concentration, the Association of Clubs 'Verge del Sofratge', with its president, Dani Luque, took the lead. From the temple, and with the Virgin in procession, the delegation moved to the port where the image has been placed on the prow of a ship and, accompanied by several boats crossed the Bay of Benidorm.

Once at sea, the diving group Nisos Benidorm placed an image of the Virgin in the background and laurel wreaths have been thrown from the main boat and prayed also in memory of the fallen ones in the sea. After the procession, the delegation moved to Elche Park where Cristina Pérez recited the traditional verse to the Virgen del Carmen. Subsequently the image was returned to the Church.

The festivities will end tomorrow, Monday, the feast of the Virgen del Carmen. At 20.30 a mass will take place in the Church of Sant Jaume and Santa Anna and at 10.00 pm a fireworks castle will be fired in Plaza del Castillo by Pirotecnia Valenciana.
