Benidorm shows its rejection of a black weekend of sexist violence
Benidorm City Council convened this noon a minute of silence at Plaza SSMM Reyes de España to show its rejection of a black weekend in which three women have been murdered by their partners or ex-partners in different parts of Spain. The acting mayor, Ana Pellicer, and the Councilor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, have led this silent concentration in which the victims have been remembered, who is added to the long statistics of deaths due to sexist violence: 18 women murdered in what year to date and 1,148 since 2003.
The first of the deaths took place last Friday night in the Almeria town of Tíjola, when a 50-year-old woman was beaten and strangled by her husband at her family home. Hours after the crime was discovered, the man turned himself into Vera Local Police, where he ended up confessing to the murder.
The dawn of Saturday to Sunday, the second of the crimes took place, in the municipality of Benajarafe, province of Malaga. The victim, a 50-year-old woman, was allegedly killed by her partner, who was injured while trying to flee from the police. Before dying, it was the victim herself who alerted the emergency services to the attack, who upon arriving at the scene could only certify her death.
Hours later, the third murder took place in Tomelloso (Ciudad Real). The victim was a 48-year-old woman, allegedly murdered by her partner while working in a restaurant. The woman's body was found in the storeroom. Two days later, the sane man of the alleged aggressor, who had taken his own life, was located.
In addition to these three deaths, a woman from Carballo (A Coruña) is in critical condition after the beating that her partner allegedly gave her early Monday morning.
In the Department of Equality, the population is reminded that the City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, it reiterates once again that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to eliminate it from the mobile call log. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year and in 52 languages.
