Benidorm to resume tomorrow the comprehensive infrastructure renewal works on Avenida Montecarlo
The project, covering almost 400 metres and with a budget of €1.3 million, is scheduled for completion by the end of the year
The comprehensive renewal works on Avenida Montecarlo will resume tomorrow, Tuesday 1 September, after being suspended for two months due to the summer season. The road was reopened to traffic in early July, when the works were suspended after the final paving had been laid on the section between Calle Londres and Calle Berlín.
Once the works resume, the aim is for the project to be fully completed before the end of the year. In this regard, Councillor for the Water Cycle José Ramón González de Zárate recalled that it is “a complex project that was progressing at a very good pace, and we want it to continue that way.” The councillor explained that the works include, among other measures, “the creation of a stormwater drainage network, which did not previously exist, the installation of a reclaimed water network, and the renewal of the drinking water and sewerage networks.”
González de Zárate stressed that “it is a difficult project, but a very necessary one for residents and neighbours in the upper part of the Rincón de Loix area. In addition to renewing existing infrastructure and creating new infrastructure, new trees and street lighting will be installed. The entire area will be made fully accessible.” The project is also affected by the nature of the terrain, “with a large amount of rock in the subsoil”, which means that the cost and the time required by the contractor are higher.
The project covers almost 400 metres of Avenida Montecarlo. The current works are a continuation of those completed more than a year ago on the section between Calle París and Calle Roma. The project was awarded for €1,355,814.06 and is being financed entirely through the Municipal Water Service Renewal Funds.
Once completed, “we will no longer have the incidents and problems caused by the old asbestos-cement pipes,” the councillor said. After approximately 40 years “without any work being carried out here”, González de Zárate highlighted that once the project is finished, “we will achieve significant water savings, as there were many leaks and areas where water accumulated; there will be improvements to street lighting and landscaping, and residents will have access to reclaimed water for irrigating their residential developments.”
Project Details
The sewerage network renewal covers 338.87 metres of concrete piping, which will be replaced with compact PVC pipes, together with 14 household connections.
A new stormwater drainage network will also be installed, as no such system currently exists. The works will include the installation of 75 gullies and 505 metres of piping.
As for the drinking water network, more than 700 metres of asbestos-cement piping will be replaced with ductile iron pipes. A reclaimed water network will also be installed to irrigate street trees and allow local residential communities to use this alternative water source for their gardens and green areas.
The project also includes improvements to the public lighting system, with the wiring being renewed while making maximum use of the existing lighting columns. The existing trees will be replaced with slow-growing evergreen species, similar to those already planted along the section where the works have been completed.
Finally, the pavements will incorporate specific solutions to ensure universal accessibility and improve road safety.
