Benidorm plans reducing speed on Mediterráneo Avenue to increase road safety
The technicians study changes of direction on Paseo de Levante; and the consultant of the PTUS, solutions to the bus stops the city center.
Benidorm City Council is considering installing speed reducers on Mediterráneo Avenue after the recent casualty episodes and because it has been found that many drivers exceed the maximum speed of circulation on this road. This measure has been addressed during the Mobility Council held today, "a consultative and very participatory body," said the mayor of the area, José Ramón González de Zárate.
The person in charge of Mobility has pointed out that "there is a problem on Mediterráneo Avenue because the maximum fixed speeds are not respected", reason why "it is necessary to adopt measures like the installation of reducing speed or the implantation of semaphores in the only two crosses that lack them, those of the streets Murcia and Journalist Emilio Romero. " De Zárate has stressed that "the absolute priority of mobility policies is road safety for all, pedestrians and drivers," and that is why "we will continue to take action to ensure that safety, even if the measures are initially criticized."
The intention is that these actions can be completed before the end of the year.
De Zárate explained that these measures would be added to the bus-bike-taxi lane that in recent weeks has operated on the avenue provisionally and that everything indicates that "is going to maintain." The mayor noted that the technicians have backed this lane, as did the rest of the members of the Council present at the meeting during the debate on this point. However, "so that there is no doubt about the suitability of this bus-bike-taxi lane, more reports will be made", both by the municipal technicians and by the consultant of the Sustainable Urban Transport Plan (PTUS).
In addition to this, the Council has also approached, suggested by the Local Police, to reorder the traffic on Paseo de Levante to limit the presence of vehicles in the first line to the maximum, diverting traffic to the Mediterranean.
On the other hand, it has been pointed out that the PTUS should be "ready before Christmas", gathering the possible contributions of the members of the Council and including "proposals to solve the problem of discretionary bus stops in the center of Benidorm" , as established by the plenary.
Finally, the project of the Sustainable Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI) was also discussed; and the change of name of the Council has taken place, which from now on will be Renewable Energy.
