Benidorm highlights the developing project 'Smart and Sustainable Tourist Destination' in the Digital Tourist

07 June 2024
Benidorm pone en valor en el Digital Tourist el proyecto en desarrollo ‘Destino Turístico Inteligente y Sostenible’

At the Digital Tourist Congress, Benidorm City Council highlighted the project 'Benidorm, Smart and Sustainable Tourist Destination', currently in development and which is an example of digitalization applied to tourism management. The mayor, Toni Pérez, outlined the details of the project during the workshop convened this morning within the framework of the seventh edition of the congress, organized by Ametic and being held since yesterday at the city's Cultural Center.

Toni Pérez recalled that this project has a budget of just over 4 million euros, co-financed with FEDER funds through the Red.es entity and that it will allow us, through intelligent management, to promote and develop actions to advance and consolidate Benidorm's standards in environmental, economic and social sustainability.”

The mayor insisted that "the purpose is to continue improving the destination and continue to be leaders, having the resident and the tourist at the centre of our action, developing actions that are replicable in other destinations, especially those that share with Benidorm their status as mature and with an important weight of international markets.”

Pérez recalled that Benidorm began this path in 2015 because “we had to be there and the strategic plan for DTI began to be drawn up.” The mayor has highlighted that a city like Benidorm with an active population that does not reach 30,000 people "is capable of generating employment for 60,000" and has emphasized the specific weight it has in terms of tourism since "with a coastline that does not is not even 1% of the Valencian Community, with a population that is not 1.4 of the Community, we are capable of representing 40% of the region's tourism and being the third destination city in Spain in regulated overnight stays after Madrid and Barcelona, with more than 15 million a year.”

The mayor has also pointed out that in the city it is “assumed” that “we are a DTI” and that this motivation “goes beyond being a lever at a given moment, but is our roadmap, our strategic plan” that supports political action “that has to make all these projects viable.”
Toni Pérez has also referred to the sustainable nature of Benidorm with 60% of the land protected, “which does not consume soil and scratches the sky”, which has allowed it “to be very efficient”. Finally, he alluded to the “new generation of destinations, the DTIs,” which, as I said yesterday, are those who know how to do things to create a better quality of life for their residents and become much more welcoming and hospitable places that manage better. “Resources that are limited anywhere in the world.”
