Benidorm extends the control and monitoring service for Sars-Cov-2 in the city's wastewater for another six months

10 January 2023
EDAR de Benidorm.

The city of Benidorm will continue to have, for at least six more months, the service to control and monitor the presence of the Sars-Cov-2 virus in wastewater. This has been approved by the Local Government Board (JGL) of Benidorm City Council after a proposal made by the Councilor for the Water Cycle, José Ramón González de Zárate.

This service was initially approved in July 2020 and hence a digital platform was implemented to monitor the virus in wastewater. Due to the persistence of the pandemic, the continuity of the provision of the service has been agreed upon for six-month periods.

Now, the health situation makes it possible to considerably reduce the surveillance and control needs and the strategic model of the Ministry of Health is followed so that, as explained by the mayor, "it is considered appropriate to maintain the monitoring service in wastewater in the WWTP of Benidorm, as the only representative sampling point of the entire city so that it becomes a permanent sentinel of the evolution and presence of the virus in Benidorm ”.

The cost of this service will be 15,080 euros and will be assumed by the concessionaire of the Water Cycle, Hidraqua, and charged to the Investment Funds.
