Benidorm expresses its condemnation for the last two sexist crimes committed in Almería and Pozoblanco

09 August 2023
Minuto de silencio en el Ayuntamiento de Benidorm.

Benidorm municipal corporation has today expressed its condemnation with a minute of silence for the last two confirmed victims of gender violence. This is a 27-year-old woman, who was murdered by her husband in the Pescadería neighborhood, Almería, last Monday, and another 31-year-old woman in the Cordoba town of Pozoblanco.

Plaza de Sus Majestades los Reyes de España has hosted this silent rally that has been led by the First Deputy Mayor, Ana Pellicer, the Councilor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, and other members of the Corporation.

The murder in Almería, as explained by the National Police, was slit by her partner in the presence of her three children, nine and eight years old and the youngest five months old. It was the minors who alerted the neighbors. The attacker had no criminal record.

As for the 31-year-old woman from Pozoblanco, she was found with her partner, who had been previously reported, with injuries caused by a rifle. Her partner, 39, shot him and then committed suicide. They leave three minor daughters, who have been taken in by relatives.

With these there are already 34 women murdered in Spain so far this year by their partners or ex-partners and 1,218 since 2003, the date on which the victims of gender violence began to be counted. Similarly, the number of minors orphaned by gender violence has risen to 39 so far this year and 416 since 2013.

The Department of Equality recalls that the City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, it reiterates once again that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to remove it from the mobile phone call log. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and in 52 languages.
