With this murder, in 2022 there were 50 women murdered by their partners or ex-partners, the same number that has already been reached this year, and 1,235 since 2003

Benidorm expresses its condemnation of the last confirmed sexist crime committed in Barcelona last year

11 October 2023
Minuto de silencio en el Ayuntamiento de Benidorm.

The municipal corporation of Benidorm has observed a minute of silence today, Wednesday, to show its rejection and condemnation of the latest murder due to sexist violence confirmed in our country. The victim was a 59-year-old woman who lived in Vilafranca del Penedés (Barcelona) and was murdered by her partner on September 12 of last year. The 77-year-old man was arrested this past weekend and in addition to the murder of his wife, whose body has not yet been located, he is accused of several sexual assaults on minors.

Plaza de SS MM los Reyes de España has hosted this silent rally led by the city's first deputy mayor, Ana Pellicer, and the mayor of Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, along with other members of the Corporation.

With this new victim, the number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners in Spain in 2022 rose to 50 and 1,235 since 2003, when victims of violence against women began to be counted. This 2022 figure equals the number of women murdered by sexist violence so far this year.

The Department of Equality recalls that Benidorm City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, it reiterates that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to delete it from the mobile call log. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and in 52 languages.
