Benidorm condemns the latest sexist crime that has ended the lives of two women in Catalonia

Benidorm City Council has today expressed its condemnation of the latest confirmed gender-based violence crime in Spain, which has resulted in the murder of two women in Catalonia. Members of the municipal council, headed by the mayor and the councillor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, have observed a minute of silence in condemnation of this crime and memory of the victims, two women aged 61 and 66 murdered last Tuesday by their former common partner.

With the confirmation of this new crime within the spectrum of violence against women, the number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners in Spain has risen to 31 so far in 2024 and to 1,275 since 2003, when this data began to be collected.

In addition, the Government Delegation against gender violence has confirmed a new case of vicarious violence: the murder last weekend of a 17-year-old girl in Toledo at the hands of her mother's partner, who was also injured in the attack.

The Department of Equality, headed by Councillor Angela Zaragozí, reminds us that Benidorm City Council has staff specialised in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened.

She also reiterates that victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to delete it from the call log of mobile phones. This service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and in 52 languages.

Likewise, in an emergency, you can call 112 or the emergency telephone numbers of the National Police (091) and the Civil Guard (062). If it is not possible to make a call and there is a dangerous situation, the ALERTCOPS application can be used, which will send an alert signal to the police with geolocation. All these means of assistance can be activated by the victim and also by anyone who knows or suspects a case of gender violence. It is a duty of the whole society.
