Benidorm condemns the femicides of two women in the provinces of Tarragona and Valencia

Benidorm condena los crímenes machistas de dos mujeres en las provincias de Tarragona y Valencia

The Benidorm City Council observed a minute of silence at noon this Tuesday to condemn the two most recent femicides confirmed in Spain by the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, which claimed the lives of two women in the provinces of Tarragona and Valencia.

The silent vigil, also organized in all municipalities of the Valencian Community by the Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FVMP), took place at the entrance to the City Hall. Numerous members of the municipal corporation participated, led by the First Deputy Mayor, Ana Pellicer, and the Councilor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí.

The victim in Tarragona was a 36-year-old woman who was allegedly murdered by her husband on September 8 in the municipality of Riudecanyes, although it has not yet been officially confirmed as a gender-based violence crime. The woman was the mother of four minor children, and there were no prior reports of domestic violence.

The victim in Valencia was a 48-year-old woman, allegedly murdered by her partner after a brutal attack on December 6th in the municipality of Catarroja. She died three days later. She was the mother of four sons. There were no prior reports of domestic violence.

With the confirmation of these two new cases, the number of women murdered due to gender violence has risen to 47 in 2025 and to 1,342 since 2003, when this data began to be collected. In addition, the number of children orphaned by violence against their mothers has reached 35 in 2025 and 504 since 2013.

The Department of Equality reminds the public that Benidorm City Council has specialised staff available to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened.

They also reiterate that victims of violence against women can call the free helpline 016, which does not appear on phone bills, although it is recommended to delete it from mobile phone call logs. This service operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year, in 53 languages, and offers a service adapted for people with disabilities.

Victims can also use online consultation services via email at 016-online@igualdad.gob.es, the WhatsApp channel at 600000016, and the online chat accessible from the Ministry of Equality's website, all of which are also available 24/7.

In an emergency, they can also call 112 or the National Police (091) and the Civil Guard (062). If making a call is not possible in a dangerous situation, the ALERTCOPS app can be used to send an alert to the police with geolocation. All these support services can be activated by the victim and also by anyone who knows of or suspects a case of gender-based violence. It is the responsibility of all of society.
