The city of Benidorm will celebrate tomorrow, May 8, the 699th anniversary of the granting of the Town Charter by Admiral Bernat de Sarrià, in 1325, which marked the founding of the current tourist capital of the Mediterranean. The commemoration will be carried out with a series of events coordinated by the Grup Carta de Poblament and the support of the Departments of Fiestas and Culture of Benidorm City Council and Associació de Penyes.
The commemoration of the founding of the city will focus on three events. The first will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, May 8, with the institutional plenary session on the occasion of 'Benidorm's Day' at 11 in the morning in the Plenary Hall of the City Council and, at 8 p.m., with a concert by the Chamber Group of Benidorm Unión Musical in the municipal Assembly Hall.
The concert program comprises five works that will be performed in this order. It will begin with the 'Bassoon Concerto Number 35 in Sí Flat' by Antonio Vivaldi, with Marí Carmen López García as soloist. It will be followed by Antonin Dvorak's 'Nocturne in Sí Major' and 'Meditation for Thaïs—an adaptation for cello by Jules Massenet and with Ximo García Sivera as soloist. The next piece will be 'Serenade Number 13 for Strings' by W. A. Mozart and the concert will end with 'Concerto for two cellos in G minor, RV535' by Antonio Vivaldi. The soloists will be Ximo García Sivera and Jacobo Navarro Palomares.
Next, on Saturday, the 11th, at 9:00 p.m. in Plaça de Sant Jaume, the representation of the granting of the Population Charter will take place, based on the text by Professor Pasqual Almiñana and in which members of the Grup and members of the club participate. Neighbour Esperanza Rostoll will hold the event.
In parallel to these events, Elche Park will host 'Benidorm Medieval', with stalls and countless shows and animations. This initiative promoted by the Departments of Festivals and Commerce together with AICO and the company Legend Especialistas will take place from Thursday, May 9 to Sunday, May 12.
'Benidorm Medieval Fair' will offer recreational and leisure activities including musical performances, dance, theatre, juggling, street entertainment, children's games, the aforementioned medieval market and a themed decoration that will transport visitors to the year 1325. In addition, the little ones will have children's attractions, a corner with game tables and a large playroom. There will also be craft workshops and a photocall.
