Benidorm closes the year below 6,000 unemployed for the first time since 2008

12 January 2018
Benidorm cierra el año por debajo de los 6.000 desempleados por primera vez desde 2008

Benidorm has closed the year below 6,000 unemployed for the first time since 2008, according to the data transferred by the Agency for Employment and Local Development (AEDL) based on the statistics of the Valencian Employment and Training Service (Servef). Specifically, the month of December has been settled with 5,821 unemployed people, compared to 6,144 the previous year. To find a year-end with better figures, we have to go back to 2008 when there were 5,277 unemployed people in December.

Of the 5,821 active jobseekers, 3,276 are women while the number of unemployed men is 2,545. By sectors, the bulk of unemployed people belong to the services sector.

The mayor, Toni Pérez, has indicated that "these figures show the economic recovery of the city, as we have returned to records of the moments before the outbreak of the crisis, and also the dynamism of Benidorm, which for its seasonally adjusted tourism model It has withstood economic setbacks better than other destinations and locations. "

However, Pérez has been cautious and noted that "although these data are encouraging, do not let your guard down; we must continue to support active policies that improve the employability of all those people who, unfortunately, still can not join or re-enter the labor market. "

At this point, the mayor recalled that "at this time the City Council, in collaboration with the Department of Employment and the Government of Spain, has four training programs and employment and four other employment promotion that have allowed us hire 142 people, of whom at least 123 were unemployed. " These eight projects, with durations ranging from 4 to 12 months, are directed to different qualification profiles, age brackets and also to people with specific socio-labor circumstances -men under 30, over 25, people at risk of exclusion. social and long-term unemployed.

In the training section, we are also working on a variety of modalities, ranging from the promotion of free time activities for children and young people to citizen attention, through gardening, paving, masonry or training as a Sports Monitor

"Improving the employability of our neighbors and propitiating the ideal scenarios for generating employment should continue to be our priority as a local administration, even though it is clear that our competences in this area are limited," he pointed out.
