Plaça de Sant Jaume hosted last night the representation of the Population Charter, recalling that May 8, 1325 in which Admiral Bernat de Sarrià delivered the founding document of Benidorm to the settlers of the village.

The Grup Carta de Poblament staged that moment again, the 697th anniversary of the birth of the town of Benidorm, in the presence of hundreds of neighbours and onlookers who filled the square in an act organized by the entity with the collaboration of the City Council and the Associació of Penyes 'Verge del Sofratge'.

The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, and the councilors of Festivals and Culture, Jesús Carrobles and Jaime Jesús Pérez, led the institutional representation together with representatives of the three groups of the Corporation and the provincial deputy, José Ramón González de Zárate. Also present were the queens of the Festes Mayores, Aila Merenciano and Chloe D'Hebroodt, and the presidents of the Comissió de Festes Majors Patronals and the Associació de Penyes, José Vicente Fuster and Adrián Romero.

After the performance of the theatrical piece, the maintainer of the act, Professor Antonio García Alonso, former director of the IES Pere Maria Orts i Bosch, addressed those present with a speech that highlighted the contributions to the world of education, precisely from Orts i Bosch.

García Alonso, in his dissertation, recalled the important role of teachers in the task of training youth; on the journey “from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge”.

After the words of the maintainer, there was an exchange of badges between the presidents of the Comissió and the Associació de Penyes and, afterwards, Adrián Romero briefly addressed the attendees to thank the effort made by the Grup Carta de Poblament for the preservation of the historical roots of the city, especially its president, Mari Luz Navarro, to whom she gave a bouquet. Romero also congratulated himself on seeing “the streets filled with the colours of the peñistas’ smocks” and the return to normality after the pandemic.

Toni Pérez starred in the last speech of the night in which he reiterated his gratitude to the members of the Grup Carta de Poblament for their "thirty years bringing the history of an entire people closer together" and elaborated that it is from the "founding fact", corroborated by the Town Charter, that "Benidorm is what it is today".

The mayor influenced the words of García Alonso and was "happy" that public education had people like him. Pérez abounded in his professional career in the world of education and valued his beginnings "from a trade unionist side claiming training for workers." Finally, the first mayor stressed that all this is claimed in the centenary year of Pere Maria Orts i Bosch.
