The action will also cover four other municipal buildings and will lead to the reduction of CO2 emissions by more than 375 tons per year

Benidorm begins at CEIP Miguel Hernández the installation of photovoltaic panels for self-consumption in eight schools in the city

Benidorm comienza en el CEIP Miguel Hernández la instalación de placas fotovoltaicas para autoconsumo en ocho colegios de la ciudad

Benidorm City Council has begun work on the installation of photovoltaic modules in eight schools in the city, which will lead to significant savings on the energy bill. An action framed in the Energy Efficiency Project, which will also be extended to four public buildings and which, in total, will involve an investment of 1,045,450.06 euros, of which 504,297.46 euros, 48% of the global amount, comes from a grant from European funds granted by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE).

The project contemplates the installation of 1,364 photovoltaic modules which will mean a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere estimated at just over 375 tons. The modules will be implemented in Ausias March, Bautista Lledó, La Cala, Mestre Gaspar López, Miguel Hernández, Serra Gelada, Vasco Núñez de Balboa, and Els Tolls schools and the municipal buildings of Les Fontanelles Nursery School, the Treatment Station for Drinking Water (ETAP), La Torreta Social Center and Palau d'Esports L'Illa de Benidorm, where the number of existing modules will be increased.

The performance has begun at the Miguel Hernández school with a budget of 49,404.74 euros. The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, visited the beginning of the work, accompanied by the Councilor for Education, Maite Moreno, and the Councilor for Public Space, José Ramón González de Zárate.

According to technical reports, until now the energy consumed from the network amounted to 60,583 kWh and the cost of the electricity bill to 7,355.05 euros. Once the installation is finished, the cost of the invoice will be reduced to 2,396.03 euros, a saving of 67% which translates into almost 5,000 euros.

An energy saving is calculated based on the use of the energy generated by the photovoltaic installation, taking into account the consumption patterns of the building.

As for the overall project - the eight schools and the four public buildings - the installed nominal power when the intervention ends will be 457 kW, which will produce 750,000 kWh. The facilities of each center will have high-performance modules, power optimizers, and a monitoring and management system for the photovoltaic field.

Mayor Toni Pérez indicated that this project "reaffirms our commitment to the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, with sustainability" and in this case, he continued, "We do it through the use of renewable energies and the reduction of Emissions of greenhouse gases".

Pérez specified that once the installation of the 1,364 planned modules has been completed, "we will be able to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 375 tons per year", a figure that the mayor has described as "very important" and that adds to " the reduction of emissions obtained in other actions already developed or that will be implemented in the short and medium term”.

Toni Pérez also referred to the Energy Efficiency project undertaken by Benidorm, of which he has said "It is very ambitious and will make Benidorm a more sustainable city and destination". "We work hand in hand with the municipal technicians so that this important political vocation translates into realities for the people of Benidorm" he added before recalling that "since 2015 we have implemented savings and renovation policies that have given us magnificent results as demonstrated by the continuous reduction in energy and electricity costs in recent years despite the brutal increase in cost”.
