The annual exhibition of posters against gender violence carried out by the students of the IES Pere Mª Orts i Bosch and promoted by the departments for Equality and Culture of Benidorm City Council has been the protagonist of a webinar on 'Sexist Violence' organized by the Diputación Alicante, as an example of good practice to make the younger population visible and aware of this problem.

At the opening of the webinar-workshop, held yesterday afternoon and focused on sexist advertising, the Councilor for Equality, Angela Zaragozí, explained that this sample of posters "is a curricular activity carried out by the Artistic High School students" of this educational center, whose students are “very aware of all the actions and projects on violence that we carry out”.

Zaragozí reaffirmed Benidorm City Council's commitment to “support and collaborate” with this campaign, since “it is necessary to work on the eradication of sexist violence so present in daily life” and that it constitutes “a violation of the rights of women and girls ”.

Likewise, the councillor thanked  Alicante Provincial Council and the person in charge of the provincial department of Equality, Mª Carmen Jover, "for having included Benidorm in this project and provincial campaign against Sexual Violence"; and he affirmed that the City Council, as an "institution closer to citizens", it is necessary to "promote the principle of equality so that it affects each person individually and thus, among all, build an egalitarian society free of violence." For this, the Department of Equality, different actions are promoted throughout the year, among them the curricular activity developed by IES Pere Mª Orts i Bosch.

During the presentation of the project, the promoter of Equality of the City Council, Marina Campos, highlighted that this activity allows "working with a priority group" such as youth, and makes it possible to "carry out a community intervention" based on the perspective that the adolescent population has on gender violence. In this regard, she stressed that the posters created by the students are "a mirror of what young people believes violence to be" and "gender stereotypes".

Campos recalled that this initiative "has been developing since 2017/2018 " and students have been making more than a hundred posters that have been exhibited in different public spaces in Benidorm, and that together constitute "a recipe of good practice to combat, make visible and raise awareness ”about sexism and gender violence through an advertising medium.

Dynamics of activity at IES Pere Mª Orts i Boch

The participants have always been 1st and 2nd year students of ‘Audiovisual Culture’ curricular subject of the Bachelor of Arts at this educational center. More than 150 male and female students have passed through these workshops carried out over these 4 years, to whom a simulation of what would be a real assignment where they have to meet certain requirements is proposed.

Before making the posters, the students receive training in gender and equality to be aware of the problem, providing them with tools so that they can achieve the requirements that are demanded in the simulation of the activity and, at the same time, prevent behaviors in the future .

The students are already working this year on new posters.
