Plaza de SS MM los Reyes de España today hosted the reading of this year's manifesto for World Day against this disease

AFA Marina Baixa demands real equal rights for Alzheimer's patients and their families

AFA Marina Baixa reclama una igualdad de derechos real para los enfermos de alzhéimer y sus familias

The Association of Relatives, Patients, and Collaborators of Alzheimer's, AFA Marina Baixa, today called for "true equality of rights" among those affected, their families, and the rest of society, highlighting the fact that "as the disease and its consequences progress, people's rights become increasingly restricted and limited, something that cannot and should not be allowed or tolerated."

The president of this association, Garbiñe Mondragón, was responsible for reading the manifesto prepared by the national confederation CEAFA this year to commemorate World Alzheimer's Day, which falls next Sunday. The event took place in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, where a commemorative banner will also be displayed this week. The event was attended by the Mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez; the Councillor for Social Welfare, Ángela Zaragozí; and other members of the municipal council, along with representatives of other local social organisations.

AFA representative Marina Baixa stated that people affected by this disease "have the right to speak and express our specific and real needs," "to be heard and understood," "to make our own decisions," "to advance knowledge in the search for treatment and cure," "to receive specific healthcare, which includes the right to an accurate diagnosis," "to receive specific social care recognized and regulated by legislative norms issued and established specifically for our group," and, finally, "to have the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030 recognize us as a specific group and stop classifying us as generic or minority groups where we do not receive the specific care we need," and to "increase the budget for social policies," as the manifesto states.

Finally, and outside of the manifesto, Mondragón had a few words of remembrance for Ángela Llorca, former Councillor for Social Welfare, who passed away last July and who would have celebrated her birthday today, and praised her role at the helm of this Department during her time in office.
