AEMET installs a new weather station in Benidorm that transmits data in real time

18 October 2016
AEMET instala una nueva estación meteorológica en Benidorm que transmitirá datos en tiempo real

The City Council has given the agency a plot in the area of Salto del Agua to extend measurement systems

Benidorm already has an automatic weather station of the Meteorological State Agency (AEMET) in the area of Salto del Agua, which will measure all parameters and transmit the data almost in real time. The councillor for Environment, José Ramón González de Zárate, and the delegate of AEMET in Valencia, Jorge Tamayo, explained that the data collected in this station is sent via GPRS hourly agency and from there it "will be broadcast throughout Spain and worldwide through the global communications system". In addition, they may be consulted on the website of AEMET. Tamayo detailed the new station will measure temperature, humidity, rainfall, quantity and intensity-both, and wind speed and direction. The delegate of AEMET clarified that since 2007 and so far the agency had a manual station on the premises of the water treatment plant of Benidorm. That station was equipped with a sentry box measuring temperature and a rain gauge. However, it could not transmit data automatically and was, as a matter of space, a wind meter. A meter consists of a mast 10 meters high if installed in the new season. The councillor for Environment indicated that the new facility is located in a municipal plot "given by the City Hall," and added that the launch of the station has been "zero cost" for municipal coffers. The delegate of AEMET indicated that its orientation and location in this site is "perfect" for the measurement, and its proximity to the previous station allow "the data series remains homogeneous". Zárate described as "positive" the entry into operation of this station for both residents "for tourism" and those who will visit the city "to have real-time data of temperature and rain possibility." In addition, this station will allow the City Council to issue citizens "certificates of wind" necessary in some cases for insurance claims. Benidorm has the only official AEMET station in the region. The nearest with the same features is in Javea and Alicante.
