El Tossal de la Cala, among the Spanish sites that will participate in the European Conference on Archeology

19 April 2022
Tossal.

More than 3,000 people have approached the Roman 'castellum' during Holy Week, with peaks of more than 1,150 visitors in a single day

El Tossal de la Cala is one of the Spanish sites that next June will participate in the European Conference on Archaeology, directed by the French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (Inrap) and held simultaneously in 46 countries on the continent.

The Councilor for Historical Heritage, Ana Pellicer, explained that "it is the first time that our Roman 'castellum' participates in these relevant conferences, designed to bring the archaeological heritage even closer to the population through various activities, which are already being planned”. In this regard, the councillor has advanced that “in the absence of specifying every one of the actions that are going to be carried out, we can anticipate that during those days there will be guided visits to the Tossal, with more passes than usual; and also that there will be activities designed for all audiences and some specifically aimed at the younger population”.

All the information about the activities of these days in Benidorm will be communicated in:

Pellicer has pointed out that "participating in these European Archeology Conferences helps us to position our 'castellum' more and better, the Roman fort from the time of the Sertorian wars that has provided researchers with the most information to date".

The person in charge of Historical Heritage has recalled that "a few months ago the Tossal experienced its scientific baptism with the publication of a global study on the site in the magazine of the Spanish Archive of Archeology (AESPA) -published by the Higher Council for Scientific Research ( CSIC)-, signed by Feliciana Sala, Jesús Moratalla, Sonia Bayo and Ángel Morillo.”

After that scientific presentation, "we have considered that it was the best time for Tossal to also leap to that public projection platform that is the European Conference on Archaeology".

A few days, he added, that "seek to give visibility and relevance to the archaeological sites and that, therefore, are in tune with the work that the City Council has been carrying out for years, investing in the recovery and enhancement of the local historical heritage own resources and also those obtained from other administrations, mainly European funds”, he specified

That investment and commitment "is bearing fruit, as shown by the numbers of visitors that Tossal receives month after month and that grow exponentially during holiday periods such as the one lived these days ago", she specified.

According to the figures provided by the mayor, from last Thursday the 14th until yesterday, Easter Monday, 3,040 people have approached the Tossal de la Cala, "which means that in just five days of Easter the site has already reached a fourth part of the total number of visitors that were registered in July and August 2021”. In fact, on Good Friday the site signed a visitor record: 1,152 people in a single day.

Pellicer has indicated that "these visitor figures confirm that the Tossal de la Cala, as a heritage and cultural element, is a complementary tourist attraction and that visitors to Benidorm are increasingly taking it into account".
