Benidorm City Council and the company Ecovidrio, the non-profit entity in charge of managing the recycling of glass packaging waste in Spain, will reward the three clubs that recycle the most during the celebration of the next Festes Majors Patronals, which are celebrated from November 11 to 15, within a new 'La Peña Recicla' campaign. The Councilors for the Environment and Fiestas, Mónica Gómez and Mariló Cebreros, presented this campaign this Thursday accompanied by the manager of Ecovidrio in the Valencian Community, Roberto Fuentes, and the president of the Associació de Penyes Verge del Sofratge, Ramón Cano.

The councillor of the Environment has indicated that the initiative will take place on the 13th and 14th, Monday and Tuesday, at Plaza de la Constitución, where Ecovidrio will install a giant scale to weigh all the glass waste that the supporters have been compiling over the years. previous days. In this way, those who want to participate in the initiative will be able to attend both days, from 12 to 4 p.m., to weigh and deposit their glass containers and be eligible for the prizes, which will consist of three lots of food products, also packaged. in glass, with which the three clubs that recycle the most kilos will be rewarded.

Mónica Gómez explained that this action aims to “contribute to sustainability and the environment” and “continue the efforts that have been made throughout the year by both the City Council and the business community, especially the hospitality industry, to recycle and reduce our environmental footprint. Likewise, the councillor of the Environment has indicated that, during the celebration of the Patron Saint Festivities, there will be several environmental educators who, in addition to weighing the glass and keeping track of the kilos recycled by each of the clubs, will also tour the festive venues to inform about this campaign and encourage supporters to participate in it en masse, with the aim of “beating last year's record.”

The Festival Councilor has also influenced this idea. Mariló Cebreros has indicated that in the 2022 Festes Majors Patronals, “more than 1,300 kilograms of glass were recovered thanks to the involvement of the supporters' clubs”, whom she challenged to “exceed the figures from the previous year”. The councilor has stated that, for this purpose, the Penyes Association will distribute among all the clubs some bags for collecting glass and has highlighted that this new edition of 'La Peña Recicla' shows that "the club members know how to have fun and that this fun does not "It is at odds with collaboration and care for the environment."

According to data provided by Ecovidrio, corresponding to 2022, the citizens of Benidorm recycled a total of 3,387,962 kilograms of glass containers during the past year. This means that each citizen recycled an average of 48.6 kilograms of glass, which places the tourist city at 2.5 times above the national average, as highlighted by the area manager of this entity, Roberto Fuentes. . The head of Ecovidrio has highlighted that “Benidorm is a benchmark in glass recycling and recovery”, which is why he has encouraged the festival-goers to “maintain this level of recycling and commitment also during the days of the Festival”.

Regarding the containers, Benidorm has an average of 166 inhabitants per container, currently having a total of 421 igloos for glass packaging waste installed in the municipality.

For his part, the president of Associació de Penyes Verge del Sofratge, Ramón Cano, has indicated that next week the bags will be distributed among the supporters' clubs in which they can collect the glass containers to participate in the campaign and has highlighted that "everything What we do for the environment and recycling is not enough, because with this gesture what we do is take care of the planet, which is ultimately doing good for everyone.”

In addition to weighing and depositing their glass containers for recycling, revelers will also be able to upload their most sustainable photos to social networks with the hashtag #LaPeñaRecicla.
