For three weeks Herrerías street will be cut off to traffic

Benidorm starts work on Monday to expand the sidewalk of Herrerías street that links with Puente Street to make it fully accessible

31 January 2020
Benidorm inicia este lunes la obra para ampliar la acera de Herrerías que enlaza con la calle Puente para hacerla totalmente accesible

Benidorm City Council starts this Monday, February 3, the extension work on the sidewalk of Herrerías Street that connects with Puente Street to make it “fully accessible”. The Councilor for Works and Universal Accessibility, José Ramón González de Zárate, explained that “with this intervention we continue with the two actions we made last year in this area: the remodeling of the Herrerías sidewalk closest to Ruzafa, in the one that used granite flooring; and the ramp that connects Emilio Ortuño with Herrerías, and that is widely used by people with mobility problems or who use baby cars. ”

De Zárate has indicated that “currently the sidewalk where we are going to act does not comply with the accessibility regulations, since it is too narrow and does not exceed 1.20 meters wide”. Hence, the proposed work includes expanding the width and renovating the entire pavement following the aesthetics of the opposite sidewalk. Once the intervention is over, "we will have a fully accessible pedestrian itinerary also from the Emilio Ortuño road to Plaza de la Hispanidad through Herrerías and Puente streets."

The councilor has indicated that "this action will last approximately three weeks." During this time and from Monday, day 3, “Herrerías street will be cut off to traffic, although in the final section of the work it is not ruled out that it will be opened to traffic during the weekend”.

Likewise, it has advanced that this replacement includes the replacement of the anchor sculpture that was removed by the work in the basement of the remodeling project of the Mediterranean Avenue. The anchor will therefore be installed in the same place it occupied before the works.

This action is included in the Maintenance and Improvement of the public highway contract that includes, among many other actions, the construction of two roundabouts to improve traffic and mobility in Rincon de Loix and La Huerta.
