The mayor of the Environment states that the recycling data indicates that citizens “are becoming more and more aware of caring for our environment”

Benidorm continues to increase, year after year, the rates and percentages of waste segregation at source. This is reflected in the data managed by the Departments of Street Cleaning and Environment of Benidorm City Council and announced this Friday by the Councilor for the Environment, Mónica Gómez, coinciding with the celebration of World Recycling Day on May 17.

The data referring to the first quarter of 2024 indicate that the city once again exceeded the kilos of selective collection by citizens recycling at home - in all types of waste analyzed. Specifically, in glass, paper and cardboard and packaging. “In 2023 we have already surpassed the data from the previous year and now, in the first months of 2024, we continue to break records,” highlighted the mayor of the Environment, who added that the figures “show that citizens and the productive fabric practice every the segregation of waste at the source again.” That is to say, more and more "we are the ones in homes and establishments who separate organic waste from packaging, glass and paper and cardboard."

The selective collection of glass was the modality that increased the most between January and April compared to the data for this same period in 2023. Specifically, by 22.85%. During this quarter 1,212,200 kilograms of glass were collected in the green container, compared to the 986,710 that were deposited in the same period of 2023.
Equally significant are the increases in the selective collection of paper and cardboard, which was 491,660 kilos in this first quarter of 2024 compared to the 424,560 kilos computed the previous year. Or, in other words, citizens and establishments placed 15.8% more waste in the blue container than a year before.

Finally, the collection of packaging reached 261,460 kilograms between January and April of this year, 10.5% compared to the same period in 2023, in which 236,580 kilos of cans, cartons, aerosols and containers were deposited in the yellow container. of plastic.

Mónica Gómez has conveyed that “the role of citizens and business is key to achieving these values of recovery and reuse of waste” which is why, coinciding with World Recycling Day, she has invited them to “continue on the same path that is so "It is giving us good results." Likewise, he has also highlighted the importance of the local Administration when it comes to "facilitating recycling as much as possible and that is why the City Council, together with the entities involved, makes a significant effort to offer the greatest possible number of containers." throughout the municipal area and making other resources available to citizens, such as fixed and mobile eco-parks.”

Recycling Centre

In addition to recycling glass, paper and cardboard or packaging, which tend to be the most common waste when recycling, the Environment councillor explained that "the City Council also encourages the recycling of other waste such as furniture, appliances, debris, pruning remains, car batteries, x-rays, batteries or fluorescent tubes, in the municipal Ecopark, which is open every day of the week.” In these facilities, located in the Foia del Ca area (CV-758 highway towards Finestrat), next to the municipal solid waste transfer plant and the light packaging plant, different waste is deposited to be recycled.

Gómez added that “within the strategy of bringing recycling closer to citizens, Benidorm also has a mobile Ecopark service, which every day, from Monday to Friday, visits a neighbourhood of the city so that citizens can deposit practically at the door of your home used cooking oil and automotive oil, button and electric batteries, x-rays, small electronic devices or small toxic containers.”

The mobile Ecopark visits the Foietes-Colonia Madrid neighbourhood on Mondays; on Tuesdays, Rincón de Loix; on Wednesdays, Imalsa-Els Tolls; on Thursdays, the Center; and on Fridays, La Cala neighbourhood.
