The City Council, in collaboration with Abreca and local leisure establishments, is promoting a broader program to accommodate an ever-increasing influx of visitors
Benidorm extends the celebration of ‘Saint Patrick’s Day’ to the whole city
Next Tuesday, March 17th, Benidorm will celebrate St. Patrick's Day, a traditional holiday among the British public that has grown significantly in popularity in the city in recent years. With the celebration approaching, the Councilor for Events, Jesús Carrobles, presented the planned activities this morning. He was accompanied by Irene Carreño, manager of Abreca, an association that has been heavily involved in the festivities this year, and by Lisa Griffin, manager of the Shamrock pub, the establishment that began celebrating this traditional day 30 years ago. St. Patrick's Day commemorates the death of the saint, patron saint of the entire island, and is a national holiday in the Republic of Ireland.
"We are seeing an increasing number of visitors for this reason," Carrobles stated, adding that "for the first time, the City Council, Abreca, and several local businesses are collaborating to make this celebration even bigger." Although the main day is March 17th, there will be events throughout the preceding week in various locations. “In fact, there’s already a great atmosphere in some venues and areas of Benidorm,” Carrobles said.
Irene Carreño, for her part, explained that this celebration “has been running itself for 30 years, and this year, thanks to the support of Visit Benidorm to give it more visibility, Benidorm will be greener than ever, with a large number of venues joining the celebration, each with its own program so that everyone can come and enjoy themselves.”
Lisa Griffin, meanwhile, recalled that 30 years ago, the Shamrock was “the only venue celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, and look at us now.” “It’s a very important day for us and for Benidorm in general,” she noted.
The Councillor for Events also highlighted the work of local businesses in the entertainment sector, “who have once again shown us the way,” and explained that to improve the atmosphere and support local establishments, “the permitted hours for music with higher decibel levels have been extended from noon until 8 pm.” After that time, the music volume must comply with the regulations.
Carrobles stated that the growth of St. Patrick's Day “is very evident” and expressed his conviction that “very soon it will reach numbers very similar to those of Fancy Dress.” Another new feature this year will be the installation of a stage on Bilbao Street near the Levante promenade, “because many entertainment venues in that area have joined the festivities, which are always a lot of fun and proceed without incident.”
