Benidorm completes the construction of a new block with 96 cemetery niches in Sant Jaume cemetery
Benidorm City Council has completed construction on the first of two new blocks of niches being built inside the Sant Jaume Cemetery, increasing the cemetery's capacity by 96 spaces. The second block, with 80 niches, will be finished in the coming weeks.
Work on these two new blocks began last December with an investment of €185,000, and a four-month construction period was established to complete the 176 new spaces and thus increase the burial capacity within the cemetery, as the area where the expansion is located has not yet been used.
The contract for the two blocks was awarded to the company Ergo Construcciones and complements the work carried out last summer, which created 40 more niches with an investment of €41,633.99. These works complement another project completed a few months ago: the improvement of accessibility on several streets within the cemetery, specifically three roads, which now have a single-level platform made of stamped concrete to improve access for people with reduced mobility.
Mayor Toni Pérez visited the Sant Jaume cemetery today, accompanied by the delegates for Cemeteries, Jaime Jesús Pérez, and for Public Space, Francis Muñoz, to see the new section and the progress of the work on the remaining one. The mayor indicated that the City Council “continues working to provide more niches in the current cemetery on plots where there was still space to accommodate new sections,” which, he added, “guarantee burial capacity for a period exceeding one year, while we continue with the work related to the major expansion of this cemetery, which doubles its surface area; provides new services, including the much-needed municipal funeral home; and ensures burial capacity in our city for the next three decades.”
Regarding the 176 new niches in this project, they will be distributed across two four-story blocks, each with two sides. The first block, already completed, has a capacity of 96 spaces, while the second, soon to be finished, will have 80 spaces. In both cases, the architectural style maintains the same appearance as the blocks built in recent years, and “they will be equipped with all necessary accessibility features, so that the public can visit and/or leave flowers for their loved ones with maximum comfort.”
