Benidorm commemorates today the International Day for the elimination of violence against women. At nine o'clock in the morning, the plenary session of the City Council has observed a minute of silence in memory of women who have lost their lives due to sexist violence in 2019. Unfortunately, when the plenary had not yet ended, it was given to know a new case, it happened this morning in Granadilla de Abona, Tenerife.
For that reason, at noon, and before the main door of the City Hall, the municipal corporation, with the mayor, Toni Pérez, and the councilor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, in the lead, with a minute of silence. He has shown his strongest commitment to the eradication of this social scourge and has read, one by one, the name of all the women who have lost their lives this year.
The 52nd victim of the 2019 macho violence in Spain has been a 26-year-old woman who died after allegedly stabbed by her partner, a 29-year-old man who, after failing his suicide attempt, has been arrested by the police.

Moments after the minute of silence, the commemorative events of November 25, organized by the Department of Equality, have continued. The municipal corporation in unison has displayed on the main balcony of the town hall a large violet banner with the motto. Benidorm against gender violence ’.
At 1:00 p.m., at Plaza de los Pinos, the Espai d'Art Els Tolls has been the place where the 'Bosque de sombras' has been staged, an initiative coordinated by the Association of Neighbors of Els Tolls to which they have assisted councilors and residents. Ángela Zaragozí has read a manifesto to demand a “firm and real commitment against sexist violence” that is accepted by all social sectors, starting with the Administration and that must “ensure adequate and sufficient budgetary provision to comply with the measures of prevention of gender violence ”in accordance with the State Pact against gender violence.
Next, the poet Isabel López Villanueva has recited two poems of homage to women and the names of the victims of sexist violence of 2019 have been read aloud. Finally, Toni Pérez has addressed the attendees to ask for more visibility on this November 25 and so that the 52 victims of this year “become zero. Let there be no more dead women, nor more battered women. ” "We are committed," said the mayor, "with what should be a fair and equal society" and has advocated that "more resources be allocated to fight this scourge."
The events of November 25 will continue this afternoon in Benidorm with the March against Gender Violence organized by the Housewives Association from 6:00 pm.
