The work, with a budget of 2.5 million, will renew 3,512 light points and 55 command centers and will reduce the power from 759.59 kW to 195.01 kW

Benidorm begins the second phase of the Energy Efficiency Project that will cover the Levante, Rincón de Loix and l'Horta areas

31 January 2023
Benidorm inicia la segunda fase del Proyecto de Eficiencia Energética que abarcará la zona de Levante, Rincón de Loix y l’Horta

This phase, also 50% financed by the IDAE, has an execution period of six months

Benidorm City Council has just started the second phase of the Energy Efficiency Project for an amount of 2,527,730.45 euros. This phase corresponds to the renovation of the lighting in the Levante and l'Horta area and the intervention will act on 3,512 light points and 55 control centers, which means renewing almost 44% of the 7,660 light points that exist in the area. This will allow the installed power to be reduced from 759.59 kW to 195.01 kW.

The intervention will be carried out by the company Sociedad Ibérica de Construcciones Eléctricas S.A. (SICE), which offered an economic reduction percentage of 43.4% and committed to the installation of a hundred hybrid photovoltaic lighting points. The improvements offered by the merchant will also include the renewal of obsolete wiring and lamp posts. The action, like the first phase, is 50% financed with European funds through the Institute for Energy Diversification and Savings (IDAE).

This midday the start of this second phase in Torrejó was presented, with the presence of the mayor of the city, Toni Pérez, and the CEO of SICE, Antonio Pérez. The estimated energy savings, as specified by the mayor, "reaches up to 75%". Pérez has advanced that the luminaires "will also have a remote management system to change the intensity and power of the lights when necessary". The execution period for this phase is set at six months "so it will be finished in June."

The mayor referred to the Energy Efficiency project and stated that "it is very ambitious and will make Benidorm a more sustainable city and destination. This is innovation and technology, and even accessibility because an illuminated street with these characteristics favors it”. Aspects that, he recalled, have to do with the Smart City. "We are getting the city to follow a strategy that we set for ourselves in 2015 and that we are culminating little by little," he stated.

With the first phase of this program (Zona Centro, Colonia Madrid, and Imalsa-Els Tolls, awarded for a little over two million) "already practically finished" now the second phase begins, specifically on Calle Nápoles and adjacent streets, "and We are almost at the point of being able to award the third and last phase” which will include the area that goes from Jaime I to the border with Finestrat. "This IDAE program is a true revolution that allows us to renew more than 50% of the current lighting," said the mayor, who stressed that with it "we follow the 2030 Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), and working side by side with the municipal technicians so that this important political vocation translates into realities for the people of Benidorm”.

The mayor also alluded to the increase in energy costs and stated that without this investment "possibly there would be economic difficulties to meet this expense." In his opinion, "nobody could venture this excessive increase, neither could we, but having opted for energy savings has avoided a cost that would have doubled or tripled without this investment."

In this sense, he specified that "since 2015 we have implemented savings and renewal policies that have given us magnificent results, as demonstrated by the continuous reduction in energy and electricity costs in these years despite the brutal increase in cost." In addition, he stressed that with the IDAE "we reach all the neighborhoods of the city and we do it with innovation, technology, and cutting-edge lighting, with less light pollution and lower cost".

Project details

The global Energy Efficiency project, for the supply and installation of 'led' luminaires and their regulation and control, represents an investment of 6,014,578.57 euros, of which just over two million were allocated to the first phase.

The investment is 50% financed by the City Council and by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), which granted Benidorm a grant for the project of 3,007,289.28 euros from European funds.

The project is operating in 7,808 light points of the 14,343 in the municipality, 54.44% of the municipal lighting, and will reach all neighborhoods. Throughout the project, work is carried out on the first line of Levante and Poniente, in the Ensanche de Levante, Colonia Madrid, Casco Antiguo, downtown area, Calvari, La Cala, Els Tolls, Rincón de Loix, the main accesses to the city, Salt de l'Aigua, Alfredo Corral, around Vía Parque, Finca Barrina, Mercasa, Guillermo Amor Sports City and Parque de l'Aigüera, among others.
