Benidorm approves the project of the total replacement of the Poniente beach pedestrian walkway

20 May 2022
Pasarela Poniente.

Benidorm City Council approves today in the Local Government Board (JGL) the project for 'Repair of the pedestrian walkway on the Poniente beach' drawn up by the municipal technicians, which is part of the maintenance and improvement actions of infrastructures and pavements that the town hall is developing.

The current footbridge, which runs parallel to the promenade, is in a state of conservation "in very poor condition", as explained by Mayor Toni Pérez, who added that it "supports very intense pedestrian traffic and its condition causes inconvenience to users, in addition to not being by the image we want for Benidorm”.

The technicians have proposed as a solution the complete replacement by another technological wooden walkway, a stable pavement made up of high-quality elements and great features, without being a fixed installation, so that it can be removed when work has to be carried out. cleaning. The intervention will affect an approximate area of 5,400 square meters.

“One of the main assets of the city is the state of conservation of the promenades, through which thousands of people pass every day. For this reason, in these years we have undertaken renovation work on various sections and completed works such as Paseo de Poniente and its extension in 2009 and 2014” Pérez recalled.

However, the passage of time and the very nature of the catwalk material mean that its life is short. "That is why we have decided to act to improve the image of an area with a very important emblematic value for us" added the mayor.

Pérez lamented that "the Generalitat, which is competent in the promenades, and the central government have been delaying the necessary updates and are not going to tackle this work that is very important for us." The mayor has advanced, however, that "we already have the authorizations from the Directorate of Coasts to start".

Toni Pérez has also remarked that in this action "we continue with the commitment undertaken years ago to sustainability, accessibility and the improvement of mobility so that all the work that is carried out will have these objectives marked".

In this sense, the mayor has indicated that the fact that the current walkway is made of slats "makes the transit of wheelchairs or baby carriages very difficult, so it was not an accessible solution." Pérez has insisted that this is something "that we are now going to solve since, in addition to being a footbridge with a stable surface, it will have the width established by the accessibility regulations".

"The new walkway will maintain an aesthetic very similar to the current one, although a completely stable, sustainable and more resistant walkway will be generated to the effects of the weather" added the mayor.

The term of execution of the works, once awarded, will be less than one year. The Local Government Board has also approved the award criteria for this intervention, which establish a maximum of 30 points for the technical proposal and a maximum of 70 points for the economic proposal. In addition, the contract will include a clause by which the successful bidder undertakes to work on weekends, holidays and at night if necessary to put into service-specific sections of the work, without this entailing any additional cost to those contemplated in the project.
