Benidorm City Council's Department of Culture presented the fourth edition of the Theatre Showcase this Wednesday. The showcase, which will take place next May at the Cultural Centre, will feature four performances by one professional theatre company and three amateur groups, comprised of residents of Benidorm and other towns in the Marina Baixa region. Councillor Jaime Jesús Pérez was accompanied at the presentation by representatives of the three local companies: Foromutis Teatro, Alpí Teatre, and Tossal Teatre. They offered a glimpse into the plays they will be performing and expressed their gratitude for the City Council's support of the event, which they consider a great opportunity for performing arts enthusiasts.
Jaime Jesús Pérez announced that the 4th Benidorm Theatre Showcase will be held between May 22nd and 30th, and that all performances will take place in the Rafael Doménech Auditorium at the Cultural Centre, starting at 8:00 PM. He also noted that tickets to attend as an audience member are now on sale at www.vivaticket.com, at a symbolic price of 5 euros for amateur performances; 15 euros for the performance featuring the Yllana and Primitive Brothers companies; and with the option of purchasing a pass for all four sessions for 22 euros.
The councillor emphasised that this is a “great opportunity to enjoy theatre in Benidorm,” a municipal initiative aimed at “bringing both professional and amateur theatrical performances closer to all residents and tourists of our city.” Jaime Jesús Pérez also praised the Theatre Showcase as “another series that has become a benchmark within the programming of the Benidorm City Council's Department of Culture' and stated that it is possible “thanks to the joint work and support of these companies and the Department, because we believed that Benidorm needed a showcase of this kind.”
Therefore, he invited the public to "buy their tickets and attend the performances, because we are sure that they will have a great time in each of the formats," while also thanking the participating companies for "giving content to this theatre showcase, in which they had a lot of drive and a lot to do with it."
Programming
The 4th Benidorm Theatre Festival will kick off on Friday, May 22nd, with Albert Camus's "The Misunderstanding," performed by three actresses and one actor from the Foromutis Teatro company. Its director, Sergio Sempere, explained that this text presents the audience with "a very, very dramatic story about how, sometimes, waiting too long to make a decision or not having things clear can lead to a tragic end," with the "moral that, when we have something pending or want to clarify an issue, we shouldn't wait because we never know what might happen."
The following performance will be by the Alpí Teatre company, which will present Alfredo Sanzol's "On the Moon" on Saturday, May 23rd. Ricardo Molina, director of this theatre group, explained that six actors and actresses are participating in this play, a production described as “a tribute to our parents, to that generation that was young in the 70s and lived through the Transition, through short scenes that unfold about that moment in Spanish history,” mostly in a comedic vein.
The third performance will be on Friday, May 29, with the Tossal Teatre group and their production ‘Group Therapy,’ directed by Manuel Palazón. Seven actors and actresses will participate, who, as explained by the director, embody “a group of people in the waiting room of a renowned psychiatrist, each with their own quirks, waiting to enter a group therapy session, but the doctor never arrives, and in an unexpected ending, we will find out why.”
Finally, on Saturday, May 30, the professional company Yllana will close this fourth edition of the Theatre Festival with their latest production, entitled ‘Gool,’ a show dedicated entirely to the so-called “king of sports”: football. Jaime Jesús Pérez pointed out that this text is “a full-fledged satire on this exciting and contradictory universe that is the world of football” and that, moreover, “it comes in a year in which the World Cup will be held, so it fits perfectly with current events.”
To conclude, the Councillor for Culture once again encouraged theatre lovers “to enjoy the different offerings that make up this Festival, which has sought to provide the audience with different styles and genres to reach all tastes.”
