Benidorm is committed to mobility with more than 13 km of pedestrian routes, 91 of bike lanes and 270,000 m2 of green areas

Sant Pere street opens to pedestrians

11 July 2020
La calle Sant Pere se abre a los peatones

Starting today, the final section of Sant Pere street, between Maravall and Jaime I, is permanently open to pedestrians. With the completion of the adaptation works that have taken place in recent weeks, Benidorm offers citizens more than 9.3 km of pedestrian routes to which must be added the 5 of Levante and Poniente promenades. And the commitment to make pedestrian more areas, as the Councilor for Mobility, José Ramón González de Zárate, announced days ago, with the incorporation of the lower part of Dr. Orts Llorca street, framed in the new configuration of Mediterráneo Avenue.

The action in Sant Pere is a consequence of the situation generated by the Covid-91 health crisis and the need to provide citizens with the necessary space to maintain social distance, an argument that has also been applied in pedestrianization work in Greco street, in Colonia Madrid; or in Avenida Armada Española, confluent with the road just opened. However, “the need to transform Benidorm - said the Mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez - into a more pedestrian-friendly city through an accessible and sustainable mobility policy is an objective that, from the outset, it was a priority for this municipal corporation ”.

Initiatives such as the Integrated Sustainable Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI), or the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS), among others, designed during the previous legislature, have opted for the pedestrianization of a city that, in recent years, “has multiplied the percentage of public roads exclusively for pedestrians, has increased the number of bicycle routes to reach 91 km of bike lanes and has increased its green areas to 270,000 m2, "said Toni Pérez."
