The City Council carries out larvicide treatment in scuppers and wetlands to prevent the presence and proliferation of this insect

The Provincial Council collaborates with Benidorm in control actions against the tiger mosquito

Mosquito Tigre

One more year, the Provincial Council of Alicante has collaborated financially with  Benidorm City Council in the control actions against the tiger mosquito that are carried out periodically in the times of appearance and reproduction of this insect. Specifically, the provincial body has granted the City Council a grant of 5,890.94 euros to finance part of the cost of the larvicide treatments carried out in the city to control the presence of Diptera, especially the tiger mosquito.

The Councilor for Health, Mónica Gómez, explained that "the City Council, through a specialized company, carries out treatments to prevent the presence and proliferation of the tiger mosquito, mainly in the scuppers of the city - more than 2,000 -, in areas prone to the accumulation of water or in the wetlands of the ravines”.

In addition to control actions, "every year, the Department of Health, in collaboration with the water concession company, Hidraqua, an information campaign is deployed to prevent the appearance and development of the tiger mosquito." Thus, together with the water bill, an information brochure is distributed with the main measures to be adopted in the domestic sphere to prevent the tiger mosquito from finding a habitat in which to breed and develop, given that the vast majority of outbreaks are located precisely in private spaces.

In this sense, the brochure emphasizes that this species usually reproduces in small amounts of stagnant water, such as in pots, boats, drains, small cisterns, canvas, pots or ashtrays located on balconies, yards, or gardens, so it is important to avoid such accumulations of water.
