The City Council is expanding the process to include citizens in preparing the Catalogue of Protections to preserve the city's historic assets and spaces

Participatory conference to strengthen the protection of Benidorm's heritage

21 May 2025
Jornada participativa para afianzar la protección del patrimonio de Benidorm

Yesterday afternoon, the El Torrejó municipal building hosted a workshop focused on the process of preparing the inventory before the Catalogue of Protections, a tool that will allow the identification, documentation, and preservation of Benidorm's protected assets and spaces.

The event was attended by the heads of the Urban Planning and Historical and Cultural Heritage departments, Lourdes Caselles and Ana Pellicer, along with other members of the governing team. The session was led by the municipal architect, Rafael Landete, and featured speakers from José M. Gómez Molina and Marina Perals, from the Terres studio responsible for drafting the inventory.

During the workshop, the importance of this catalogue as a technical tool for preserving the city's historical legacy was emphasised. Lourdes Caselles emphasised that it will be a "rigorous, technical, exhaustive, and realistic document that will delve into the policy implemented by the City Council over the last ten years, during which sites such as El Castell, the Torre de les Caletes, the Roman Castellum of Tossal de la Cala, and l'Hort de Colón have been protected and restored."

Caselles called on residents to actively participate in the development of the catalogue, "delving deeper into the collective memory of our city." To this end, the City Council and the drafting company will create a contact form, available on the municipal website.

A Catalogue of Protections is an urban planning document that identifies and protects elements of a city's cultural, historical, architectural, landscape, or environmental heritage and is based on the Land Use, Urban Planning, and Landscape Law (LOTUP).

The Benidorm Protection Catalogue will include not only ancient buildings and monuments, but also significant elements of 20th-century architecture that have shaped the city we all know today. It aims to protect public spaces of symbolic value and ethnographic, cultural, environmental, and landscape elements.

Once finalised, it will serve as a basis for consolidating heritage conservation policies and ensuring their preservation and use for future generations.
