The Mediterranean Avenue, awarded as the best work in the province at the XVII FOPA Awards
The gala for the 17th Public Works and Auxiliary Federation (FOPA) Awards of the province of Alicante last night distinguished the work of Reurbanization and Remodeling of the Infrastructures of the Avenida del Mediterráneo and Surroundings of Benidorm as the Best Work in the Province among those developed in the years 2022 and 2023. The event was held at the ADDA in Alicante and was attended by the mayor, Toni Pérez, who collected the award.
This work was promoted by the City Council and was carried out by the Temporary Union of Companies (UTE) Orthem and Emortel with an investment of 13.98 million euros. The work was completed in July 2022 and has guaranteed sustainability, accessibility and integration in an urban environment without architectural barriers generated with a single platform.
The work was completed with the installation of the well-known technohito, a 22-metre-high structure at the intersection of the avenue with Esperanto Street, which is wrapped in LED screens to become a large digital screen offering advertising or service information. The work on the Mediterranean Avenue also included new lighting, green spaces and renovation of street furniture.
Another objective achieved after the remodelling work is the substantial increase in shaded areas. This has led to lower temperatures in hot weather, making the walk much more comfortable and pleasant. The decrease in road traffic and the speed limit of 10 km/h have also contributed significantly.
The mayor has highlighted that the new Mediterranean Avenue “has transformed this part of the city into a public space in which technology and innovation invite citizens and visitors to enjoy a friendly and accessible environment”.
In this regard, it is worth remembering that Benidorm City Council has already taken the first steps to carry out the second phase of the remodelling of this avenue in the section that goes from Avenida Europa to Calle Filipinas, for which the subsoil is being studied to determine the possibility of building an underground car park before proceeding to tender.
