The government proposes to ask Conselleria the conversion of the train-tram line in Benidorm

17 May 2017
El gobierno propone pedir a Conselleria la tranviarización del TRAM en Benidorm

This action would favor sustainable mobility by eliminating crossings and replacing them with traffic lights

Public Works will carry out an analogous project in Dénia

The local government will propose to the rest of the municipal corporation to request the Department of Housing, Public Works and Vertebración del Territorio the conversion of the TRAIN-TRAM line as it passes through the municipality of Benidorm. An action that would allow Benidorm to "move towards more sustainable municipal development" in the area of mobility, and was included in the project of conversion of Line 1 Alicante-Dénia, drafted years ago by Conselleria through the Managing Authority of the Transport and Ports Network of the Generalitat (GTP).

The mayor, Toni Pérez, explained that the City Hall, Conselleria and Ferrocarrils of the Generalitat Valenciana (FGV) have already held meetings to resume this project and promote the actions planned in Benidorm. In the line of these talks, the mayor will raise to the next plenary a proposal asking the General Directorate of Public Works, Transport and Mobility of the Conselleria to issue "resolution of the streamlining of the FGV line" in Benidorm as soon as it has vehicles Hybrids.

This resolution would imply that the section of line between the station of Benidorm and Altea would stop being railroad. In the short term this would allow TRAM trains to travel through Benidorm in tram mode and at reduced speed, and "fundamentally, to eliminate the current architectural barriers linked to the line, substituting crossings by crossings regulated by traffic lights or roundabouts."

In addition to improving mobility, and according to the technical report accompanying the proposal, this action would restore the existing rail network, which would be revalued and could be used for pedestrian use and recreation.

But in addition, Benidorm does not renounce "complete tranviarización". That is why the proposal also calls for "the beginning of the procedures" for this tramvialization of the line and its "electrification from the station of Benidorm to the one of Altea".

The mayor has indicated that "full tranviarización is a more long-term action, which requires investment to carry out important works and infrastructure such as the construction of an intermodal station or the burial of the route at some points; Some conditioning factors that we already included in our allegations to the Tren de la Costa project, with which it would be 100% compatible. " "That is why, until that complete tranvivalization arrives we want to advance as much as possible, eliminating architectural barriers and favoring sustainable mobility with hybrid wagons," he added.

Pérez has stressed that the City Council and Conselleria share "the same vision on how to structure and carry out a sustainable urban development around the TRAM, as evidenced by the project of tranviarización that has already authorized for Dénia and that it will foreseeably begin to execute this same year". "We want this model also to be implanted in Benidorm and do it simultaneously, since both actions were conceived at the same time," he concluded.

The proposal will be decided Monday in an information commission and will be addressed in the month-end plenary.
