Benidorm City Council, through the Local Government Board, has approved the project to install a new wastewater collector at L'Illa de Benidorm Sports Palace to remove and replace the facility's current wastewater pumping station. The project was carried out by Hidraqua, the concessionaire of the Municipal Drinking Water and Sanitation Service, on behalf of the Department of Water Cycle.

Palau d'Esports is located where municipal sewage networks are still under development. Therefore, since the construction of the sports facilities, wastewater has been removed from the facility using a pumping station installed on the premises.

The Councilor for Water Cycle, José Ramón González de Zárate, stated that due to the persistence of operational problems at the aforementioned pumping station, "with periodic incidents in operation and maintenance," it was deemed appropriate to commission the drafting of a technical solution "to ensure the efficient discharge of wastewater most sustainably and reliably." The result was the approved project, "which proposes a new gravity collector that will replace the existing pumping station, reducing energy consumption, maintenance costs, and the risk of spills due to pump failure," the councillor explained.

The project has already been reviewed by technicians and meets the technical and regulatory criteria required by municipal planning and sector regulations." The budget for the new collector amounts to €475,989.13, and the construction work will be financed from the infrastructure renovation funds of the concessionaire company Hidraqua.

González de Zárate emphasised that with the implementation of this project, "we are solving some of the wastewater disposal problems that were occurring frequently at the Palau, and we are moving forward with the renovation of all hydraulic infrastructure to further advance efficient water management."
