Benidorm resumes works on Gorrión street after a modification to improve the project

Work on Gorrión Street has been resumed after a modification incorporated into the project to improve it. The project in question is 'Improvement of pedestrian mobility and accessibility of the southern area of Jaime I (Phase II), included in the EDUSI and with a budget of 585,700.96 euros, which covered Tordo, Jilguero and Sparrow. The work had to be interrupted as the modification had to be included and approval was required, although it still did not contain economic content.

This action was carried out because the urban configuration of these streets presents great difficulties in the accessibility and mobility of more sustainable means of transport such as bicycles, buses or pedestrian traffic. The narrowness of the sidewalks stands out in the area, where most of them are less than two meters, with numerous obstacles often causing the effective width of the sidewalk to be reduced to 80 centimetres.

Added to all this is the lack of accessibility with the existence of stairs and slippery pavement, which is very harmful for the elderly and people with reduced mobility.
During the intervention period between the start of the work and now, those responsible for the action have received numerous requests from residents in the area for a series of adjustments to be made to the works. After evaluating them, the technicians verified that these requests could be met based on the reduction offered by the winning company and, therefore, without any additional cost to the municipal coffers.

This morning, Mayor Toni Pérez and the Councilor for Public Space, Francis Muñoz, visited the area to learn the details of the modifications introduced, which correspond to the demolition of the last section of the stairs that give access from Gorrión Street to the homes (lower flight of stairs), so that it becomes an accessible route for people with reduced mobility and can move around without additional help with wheelchairs or other autonomous aids.

With this modification, it is possible to provide accessibility to some of the portals located on the stairs that connect Maravall Street with Gorrión Street, leaving another part without connecting by ramp, but which can be carried out in the future without affecting the works carried out and, therefore Consequently, without an increase in cost when executing them in a different phase.

Another modification is the increase in green areas on Gorrión Street, for which the placement of large planters with small trees and various low-maintenance shrubs, accompanied by decorative gravel, has been planned. Both the mayor and the councillor of Urban Secene have apologized to the neighbours for any inconvenience that the delay in the work may have caused.

The technical reports indicate that after calculating the modifications, their approximate amount amounts to 149,529 euros, "which can be executed with the amount offered by the successful bidder of the works without assuming any additional cost" and it is even noted that these modifications “would be contemplated within the Project Improvements Annex.”
