Benidorm renews drinking water pipelines along Camí del Llandero
The project, with an investment of just over €50,000, will put an end to the recurring breakdowns caused by the obsolescence of the main water pipeline
Benidorm City Council’s Water Cycle Department has begun work to renew and replace sections of the drinking water network along Camí del Llandero. The project represents an investment of just over €50,000 and is being carried out under a minor contract, following “the critical condition of this infrastructure due to its obsolescence,” explained Water Cycle Councillor José Ramón González de Zárate.
The deterioration of the pipeline has led to as many as 90 breakdowns being recorded in recent years along the section currently being upgraded. This figure increases significantly during the summer months, “when breaks occur almost every day at different points in the network.” According to the councillor, this situation “affects the continuity of the water supply to residents, particularly during periods of peak demand, and results in a significant increase in maintenance costs.”
The project includes the renewal of 335 linear metres of the network through the installation of a high-density polyethene pipe with a nominal diameter of 75 millimetres. It also includes the installation of eight new household connections along the section covered by the works.
The works are being carried out by Veolia, the company responsible for the city’s Integrated Water Cycle concession, and are expected to take three weeks to complete. With this intervention, González de Zárate said, the City Council “aims to improve the reliability of the network, ensure continuity of the service and reduce both breakdowns and water losses caused by leaks.”
The councillor stressed that this is “a priority project because our constant aim is to ensure that not a single drop of water is lost and to improve efficiency in water management.” González de Zárate concluded by noting that “the fact that our water network operates at more than 96% efficiency is the result of projects such as this one, together with the continuous investment we make in improving and modernising our infrastructure.”
