This new crime brings the number of victims of violence against women to 28 so far this year and to 1,272 since 2003

Benidorm condemns the sexist murder of a 74-year-old woman in A Coruña

06 August 2024
minuto de silencio

Benidorm City Council held a minute's silence on Tuesday to condemn the latest murder due to violence against women confirmed in the last few hours in our country, which ended the life of a woman in A Coruña. The silent rally took place at midday at the door of the City Hall and was led by Mayor Toni Pérez and other members of the municipal Corporation, who thus expressed their unanimous rejection of this new sexist crime.

The Government Delegation against Gender Violence and the Ministry of Equality have reported that the victim is a 74-year-old woman who was allegedly murdered by her 76-year-old husband last Friday in A Coruña. The couple had four adult children and there were no previous complaints of gender violence against the alleged aggressor, who is under arrest and has already been sent to prison.

With the confirmation of this new murder within the spectrum of violence against women, the statistics on the number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners in Spain have risen to 28 so far in 2024 and to 1,272 since 2003, when these data began to be collected.

The Department of Equality headed by Councillor Ángela Zaragozí reminds us that Benidorm City Council has staff specialised in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. She also reiterates that victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to delete it from the call log of mobile phones. This service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and in 52 languages.

Likewise, in an emergency, you can call 112 or the emergency telephone numbers of the National Police (091) and the Civil Guard (062). If it is not possible to make a call and there is a dangerous situation, the ALERTCOPS application can be used and will send an alert signal to the police with geolocation. All these means of assistance can be activated by the victim and also by anyone who knows or suspects a case of gender violence. It is a duty of the whole society.
