Benidorm completes renovation of water infrastructure and improvement of the urban scene in Monte Carlo and Armada Española

11 April 2025
Benidorm finaliza las obras de renovación de infraestructuras hidráulicas y mejora de la escena urbana en Montecarlo y Armada Española

Two of the major projects affecting the city in recent months can now be considered completed just before Easter, as previously announced by the City Council. These projects are being carried out on Avenida Montecarlo—in the section between Paris and Roma streets—and on Avenida Armada Española.

Both projects primarily involved renovations to the underground water infrastructure, although the project also took advantage of the opportunity to improve urban aesthetics and accessibility, which has been improved in both cases. This morning, the Councilor for Water Cycle, José Ramón González de Zárate, witnessed this firsthand, visiting both locations where workers are putting the finishing touches before opening to traffic and normal foot traffic.

In the case of Avenida Montecarlo, the underground hydraulic infrastructure (stormwater, sewage, and drinking water systems) has been renovated, and a reclaimed water network has been added to which homeowners' associations can connect for watering gardens or common areas, thereby reducing drinking water consumption and lowering costs. Paving has also been completed, along with the installation of new lighting and trees. "It's one of the main arteries of Rincón de Loix, and it was a much-needed project, much in demand by residents, who now benefit from its aesthetic appeal, accessibility, and comfort," stated González de Zárate.

Once this first phase is completed, "which encountered many problems at the beginning due to the bankruptcy of the first company," the City Council is already considering the second phase, which covers the section between Roma and Berlín streets. The project is under review, and the plan is to launch the bidding process soon so that it can be awarded in September and work can begin after the summer.

Regarding the work carried out on Avenida Armada Española to adapt the last section of the sewage collector at its junction with Jaime I, the project has resolved the problem the collector was experiencing due to the slight gradient in several sections, which caused slow flow rates and elevated interior depths.

This work arose from the need of the neighbouring municipality of Finestrat to undertake emergency work to renew and expand its pumping system to the Benidorm WWTP. The work was requested by Finestrat to the EPSAR "to renew the pumping line to Benidorm from the Cala de Finestrat Wastewater Pumping Station (EBAR)," explained the councillor. This renovation implied a significant increase in future pumping capacity to the Benidorm system.

For this reason, González de Zárate stated, "it was necessary to provide more capacity to the sewage system because we will also be collecting wastewater from Finestrat."

The investment amounted to €162,535 and was carried out by Hidraqua, funded by the Service Renewal Funds, although the Public Wastewater Treatment Entity (EPSAR) is financing 90% of the cost (€146,281.50). The landscaping work was carried out by the Parks and Gardens concessionaire, Actúa.

"This Benidorm government once again demonstrates that it knows how to manage and administer, and also that we are meeting the deadlines we set," stated the councillor, who also highlighted the recent projects carried out on Ibiza Street and Elche Park. "Little by little, we are making the city more accessible and improving services," he concluded.
