The works, included in Benidorm DTI + Seguro Plan, has a budget of 400,000 euros

The works of Tossal de La Cala museum are advancing, which have allowed the excavation of new areas

Tossal La Cala

The new intervention in El Tossal de La Cala is advancing at a good pace, which has made it possible to excavate three new areas of the site and make it a museum. The mayor, Toni Pérez, and the acting councilors for Historical Heritage and Public Space, Ana Pellicer, and José Ramón González de Zárate, visited the site today to check on the ground how this project, included in the Tourism Sustainability Plan, is progressing. Benidorm DTI + Seguro' and which represents an investment of 400,994.38 euros.

Municipal technicians, personnel from the company in charge of the work, and Jesús Moratalla, co-director of the excavations, together with Feliciana Sala, also a professor of Archeology at the University of Alicante (UA), have also participated in this visit.

The mayor recalled, "with this ambitious project we want to continue advancing in the process of studying, recovering and enhancing the Roman 'castellum' from the 1st century BC, and to do so by acting on different lines". On the one hand, he has expressed, "intervening in spaces that to date had practically not been excavated to finish delimiting the fortification"; and on the other, "making the site even more accessible and protecting the most significant remains and finds and the unique elements that have been discovered in El Tossal."

Toni Pérez has detailed that "as can already be seen on the ground, one of the singular elements to which attention has been paid has been the recovery and enhancement of what would be the first street in Benidorm, around which the Roman fortification of Tossal is structured, and from which a new route has been generated to access the lower square of the site”. At this point, new rooms have been excavated in the section closest to the cliff.

Another focus of the project is the protection of the relief located at the beginning of 2020 and which is made up of three recognizable elements: a human face, a cornucopia, and a phallus. As the mayor advanced, "the technical staff of all the parties involved has already finalized the solution that will be adopted to exhibit this finding with the maximum guarantees without separating it from Tossal."

The works includes the renewal of informative signs, public furniture, lighting, and video surveillance systems.
