The UA begins on Monday the 5th campaign of excavations in the Tossal of La Cala promoted by the department of Historical Heritage

La UA comienza el lunes la 5ª campaña de excavaciones en el Tossal de La Cala promovida por el área de Patrimonio Histórico

Ana Pellicer and Feliciana Sala have presented today this new campaign whose main objective is to find out the exact location of the gateway to the 'castellum'

The councillor of Historical Heritage, Ana Pellicer, and the archaeologist of the University of Alicante (UA), Feliciana Sala, have presented this morning the fifth campaign of excavations in the archaeological site of Tossal of La Cala, where is the 'Roman castellum' and a fort of the first century BC. The work will take place in two periods of two-weeks and begin next Monday, July 3.

As Feliciana Sala explained, "the main objective of this campaign is to find out the exact location of the entrance gate to the castellum", since there are two possible options based on the findings already made and the written testimonies by Father Belda in the middle of the last century. Sala has added that "we already know how the fort was and how it was structured, but we need to know exactly where that great door was," so excavations are going to be made at two different, almost opposite points of the site.

Ana Pellicer thanked "the magnificent work that is being developed by the UA team that runs and coordinates Feliciana Sala" and stressed that "thanks to its discoveries our Tossal deposit is on the international map" for the interest it arouses in the guild of archeology. He has also had words of thanks to people in charge of Hotel Bali, who are in charge of the food and equipment of the archaeologists during the period of excavations.

Feliciano Sala has recognized that "every campaign we solve questions but new challenges are posed". In fact, this year will also deepen in better understanding the structure and operation of the different rooms discovered in previous excavations.

Looking to the future, and once the unknown questions are solved with the necessary tests, the objective is to be able to carry out historical recreations on how was life in the Tossal of La Cala and what happened in those years. Sala has stated that "these types of theater recreations are increasingly successful as a cultural and tourist claim"

Last May, a 3D recreation of the 'castellum', presented by the archaeologists of the UA directed by Feliciana Sala, was presented. The fort, first century BC, was active during the Sertorian wars and was located at the top of the hill of La Cala.
