The Regional Government accepts the request of the City Council and modifies the declaration as an Area of Large Tourist Influence of the city
Shops in Benidorm may open on Sundays and holidays from mid-June to January 5
Shops in Benidorm may open on Sundays and holidays from mid-June to January 5. This has been reported by the Councilor for Commerce, Lorenzo Martínez, after the Official Gazette of the Generalitat Valenciana (DOGV) has published today the resolution of the Ministry of Sustainable Economy, Productive Sectors, Trade and Labor by which the declaration is modified of "the area of great tourist influx of the municipality of Benidorm (ZGAT)".
Martínez pointed out that “this is good news for the sector”, and explained that “the Department thus addresses the request promoted by the Benidorm City Council together with AICO” to modify the ZGAT declaration of the city, in such a way that the opening period of commercial establishments is extended on Sundays and holidays.
The councillor has pointed out that " the City Council and the Department of Commerce had very clear that it was necessary to undertake measures to support the sector and that they try to boost commercial activity to face the economic crisis that we are experiencing", and that is why this request was raised to the Regional Government.
Once this modification has been approved, commercial establishments in Benidorm may open "on Sundays and holidays in the period between June 15 and January 5". They are exempted from this period of commercial freedom on October 9, December 25 -or on the 26th when it is declared a holiday due to the transfer of Christmas-, and on January 1.
In the same way, the measure also covers Sundays and holidays in the period between Palm Sunday and the second Sunday of Easter - except on May 1 in case Easter coincides with this holiday.
Until now, shops in Benidorm had free business hours during the Easter period and from June 15 to September 15.
The resolution approved by the Ministry is valid for four years.
