Despite being a school and residential transit zone, many drivers drive over 60 km / h

Mobility installs an informative radar on Vicente Pérez Devesa Avenue so that vehicles can moderate speed

28 January 2020
Movilidad instala un radar informativo en la avenida Vicente Pérez Devesa para que los vehículos moderen la velocidad

The Department of Mobility has installed an informative radar on Vicente Pérez Devesa Avenue to make vehicles moderate their speed as they pass through this road, where the speed is limited to 30 kilometers per hour. The councilor of the area, José Ramón González de Zárate, explained that “in the week that has been in operation we have detected that there are vehicles at more than double the allowed speed, exceeding even 60 and 70 kilometers per hour”, a behavior that it is wanted to correct since “it is an area of important transit of schoolchildren to the Mediterranean IES, to where more than 1,000 students attend their classes”. Precisely the proximity of the educational center led the City Council to reduce the speed of this urban road from 40 to 30 kilometers per hour.

De Zárate has pointed out that "the peculiarity of this informative radar is that it shows a luminous icon of a smiling face when it is circulating at the right speed, and a sad face when driving faster than allowed." The use of these emoticons has been chosen because they are easily recognizable for the smallest occupants, who will also be able to warn the familiar driver if they are driving above the allowed speed.

The councillor has indicated that “based on the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan we are reconfiguring all the roads of Benidorm at the speeds set by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT)”, while “we are already working on a list of conditions for the services linked to the traffic with which radars are going to be installed in different parts of the city that will no longer be only informative ”.
